Questions & Answers

180-Hour Texas Real Estate Sales Agent Course – Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to become a real estate agent in Texas?
Six things: be at least 18, file your Sales Agent application with TREC ($206), complete 180 hours of qualifying education, pass a background check and submit fingerprints to the Texas Department of Public Safety, pass the state exam, and find a sponsoring broker. You have one year from filing to finish every step. See the full step-by-step guide.
Do I need a sponsoring broker to get my Texas license?
Yes. TREC issues your license as inactive until a sponsoring broker takes you on. You can complete your 180 hours, pass the exam and be approved without one, but you cannot practice until you are sponsored. Most new agents line up a broker while they are still studying.
Which courses does TREC require for the 180 hours?
The 180 hours is six separate 30-hour courses: Principles of Real Estate I (#02717-REQC), Principles of Real Estate II (#02718-REQC), Law of Agency (#02603-REQC), Law of Contracts (#02600-REQC), Promulgated Contract Forms (#02602-REQC) and Real Estate Finance (#02601-REQC). All six are included in every MLS Campus package.
How much does a Texas real estate license cost?
Your 180-hour course starts at $289.42. On top of that TREC charges a $206 application fee, the state exam is $43 paid to PearsonVUE, and fingerprinting is $37 paid to IDEMIA if you have not been fingerprinted for TREC before. The course price is the only part you pay to MLS Campus.
How long does it take to get a Texas real estate license?
Most people take three to six months. The 180 hours is self-paced, so how fast you finish the coursework is up to you, and every package includes one year of access. After that, allow time for the application, fingerprinting, exam scheduling and finding a sponsoring broker.
Is MLS Campus TREC-approved?
Yes. MLS Campus is a TREC-approved provider, license #701091-QP, and all six 30-hour qualifying education courses carry their own TREC course numbers. Completing them satisfies the full 180-hour education requirement for a Texas sales agent license.
Can I take the Texas 180-hour course online?
Yes. All 180 hours are 100% online and self-paced, on desktop, tablet or mobile, with audio lessons included. You can start immediately and study around your schedule, and every package is covered by a 30-day money-back guarantee.
